Can a Woman?

(to the tune of: She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain)

by Iris Hirsch of GS Central Maryland

Can a woman fly an airplane?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman build a building?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman fight a fire?

Can a woman change a tire?

Can a woman lead a choir?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a lawyer?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman fix an engine?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a drummer?

Can a woman be a plumber?

Can she play ball in the summer?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a doctor?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman drive a tractor?

Yes she can. yes she can!

Can a woman lead a nation?

Can she run a TV station?

Can she head a corporation?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Just you wait until we're older,

Then you'll see

We'll be women in tomorrow's history!

As we grow up through the years

We'll sing out loud and clear

Can we start the process here?

Yes we can, yes we can!!

-- Thanks to Elizabeth Grimsley, Volunteer,

Shining Trail Council of Girl Scouts, Keokuk, Iowa

Johnny Appleseed

(grace)

The Lord is good to me,

And so I thank the Lord,

For giving me the things I need,

The sun and the rain, and the apple seed.

The Lord is good to me.

And every seed that grows

Shall grow into a tree.

And one day soon

There'll be apples there

For everyone in the world to share.

The Lord is good to me.

Ode To A Girl Scout Leader

(to the tune of: Battle Hymn of the Republic)

I was glad to have a daughter

Because my first child was a son

I thought of all the ruffles

All the frilly bows and fun

I thought of how we'd sit and talk

At night when day was done

Wasn't I the foolish one?

She was only 1/2 past 7

When they called me to the fore

I said, "Oh no, I'm not equipped"

They said, "oh yes, what's more

We will train you in the basics

And outfit you for the corps."

And they shoved me out the door.

Glory, Glory, I'm a leader

How'd I get to be a leader

All I did was have a daughter

Is this the price I pay?

They taught me to be thrifty

To be thoughtful, to be true

They taught me to string beads

Like all the noble Indians do

I had to learn to dig a trench

And how to use it too

And you should taste our stew.

I had to learn to sing songs that

I didn't understand

I learned to dance the polka

And to make a rhythm band

To think of what to do and to

Forget what I had planned

And they say that Scouting's grand

Glory, Glory, I'm a leader

Me, they had to make a leader

I can't even build a fire

Let alone put up a tent.

We went walking in the woodland

Just my Girl Scout troop and me

The handbook says that nature

Has a wealth of sights to see

It's true that we were sights

When we were found eventually

And I do this all for free!

I'm not meant to be a leader

I don't know which bird is which

My wiener forks all burn up

We come home from hikes and itch

The sit-upons all fell apart

I showed them the wrong stitch

But no one wants to switch!

Glory, Glory, I'm a leader

Someone's got to be a leader

Tell me why I should be happy

When no one envies me.

But even though I grumble

And I mumble and I shout

And some days sit and wonder

What would be the best way out

I guess when all is said and done

There isn't any doubt

I'm glad to be a Scout.

So if you see me packing

For those weekend over nights

With a lot of happy Scouts

Gathering tents and pots and lights

We'll be back home when it's over

Dirty, tired and covered with bites

But we've seen nature's sights.

Glory, Glory, I'm a leader.

Hallelujah, I'm a leader

They can carve it on my tombstone

"Here's a gal who did her best."

Cookie Version

-----GIRLS VERSION-----

We're selling Girl Scout cookies,

Yes, it's Girl Scout Cookie time!

"Would you like to buy some?"

Is our cookie selling line.

We've got lots to choose from,

Don't you see your favorite kind?

We thank you very much!

Glory, glory we are Girl Scouts!

Smiling, cookie selling Girl Scouts!

Please buy cookies, you can help us.

We can't eat them all ourselves!

-----ADULT VERSION-----

We teach our girls business skills

Drill math into their brain.

We sit cookie booths in sunshine

And in wind, and heat, and rain.

We smile until our lips are numb

For great financial gain,

But we still have cookies left!

Glory, glory I'm a leader

A grinning, cookie chomping leader

All I ate was 40 boxes

And I still have cookies left!

Whip-poor-will

(three part round)

Gone to bed is the setting sun,

Night is coming and day is done.

Whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will,

Has just begun.

Whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will,

Has just begun.

Ash Grove

Down yonder green valley,

where streamlets meander,

where twilight is fading,

I pensively roam.

Or at the bright noontime,

In solitude wander,

Amid the dark shades of the

Lonely ash grove.

‘Tis there where the blackbird

Is cheerfully singing,

Each warbler enchants with his

Notes from a tree.

Ah then little think I,

Of sorrow or sadness,

The ash grove enchanting

Spells beauty to me.

Ho! Young Rider

Ho young rider, apple-cheeked one,

With a riding,

On your steed so black and prancing,

With a riding

What matters where I ride

Slovak mountains are my pride

Dusha moya dusha moya

Ho young rider, apple cheeked one,

With a riding,

On your steed so black and prancing,

With a riding,

What matters where I roam,

Slovak mountains are my home

Dusha moya, dusha moya.

Hey!

(dusha moya means little sweetheart)

Hello

(greeting)

Hello, hello, hello; we are glad to meet you,

We are glad to greet you

Hello, hello, hello!

(this is to be sung in four groups, the first group holding hello until the rest have chimed in)

Sarah the Whale

(to the tune of: Dixie)

In Frisco town there lived a whale

They fed her peanuts by the pail,

And washtubs and bathtubs

And sailboats and schooners.

Her name is Sarah and she's a peach,

But don't put food within her reach

Or babies, or nursemaids

Or chocolate ice cream sodas.

She loves to smile and when she smiles

You can see her teeth for miles and miles,

And her tonsils and her spare ribs

And things too fierce to mention.

Now what can you do in a case like that,

There's nothing to do but sit on your hat,

Or your toothbrush, or your best friend,

Or anything else that's helpless.

The Girl Scout Song

Girls Scouts together, that is our song

Winding the old trail, rocky and long

Living our motto, learning our creed

Girl Scouts together in every good deed.

Girl Scouts together, happy are we,

Friendly to neighbors, far o’er the sea.

Faithful to country, loyal to home,

Girl Scouts together wherever we roam.

G.I.R.L. S.C.O.U.T

She wears a G for generosity

She wears an I for interest too

She wears an R for real sportsmanship

She wears an L for loyalty, for loyalty

She wears an S for her sincerity

She wears a C for courtesy, for courtesy

She wears an O U T for out-door life, out-door life

And that's the kind of girl I want to be!

God Bless My Underwear

(to the tune of: God Bless America)

God bless my underwear, my only pair.

Stand beside them, and guide them,

As they sit in a heap by the chair.

From the washer, to the clothes line,

To my camp pack, to my rear.

God bless my underwear, my only pair.

God bless my underwear, or I'll be bare!

I Know A Place

I know a place where no one ever goes

There’s peace and quiet, beauty and repose

It’s hidden in a valley beside a mountain stream

And lying there beside the stream

I find that I can dream.

Only of thing of beauty to the eyes

Snow-capped mountains rising to the sky.

Now I know that God made this world for me

One can imagine themselves as in a dream

Climbing up a mountain or down a small ravine

The beauty of this peace and quiet always shall stay

To make this place a haven each and every day

Oh how I wish I never had to leave

All my life such beauty to receive

Now I know that God had made this world for me.

Where Go The Boats?

Dark brown is the river, golden is the sand.

It flows along forever, with trees on Either hand,

Green leaves a-floating, castles on the foam,

Boats of mine a-boating, where will all come home.

On goes the river, and out past the mill.

Away down the valley, away down the hill,

Away down the river, a hundred miles or more,

Other little children will bring my boats ashore.

The Bear Song

(a repeat song)

The other day, I met a bear,

Back in the woods,

Oh way back there,

The other day I met a bear,

Back in the woods, oh way back there.

He said to me, Why don’t you run?

I see you don’t have any gun.

He said to me why don’t you run,

I see you don’t have any gun.

And so I ran, away from there,

But right behind me was that bear.

And so I ran away from there,

But right behind me was that bear.

I saw a tree, and did decide,

That the nearest branch, was ten feet high.

I saw a tree and did decide,

That the nearest branch was ten feet high.

And so I jumped, into the air,

But I missed that branch oh way up there,

And so I jumped into the air,

But I missed that branch oh way up there.

Now don’t you fret, now don’t you frown,

‘cause I caught that branch, on the way back down.

Now don’t you fret, now don’t you frown,

‘cause I caught that branch on the way back down.

This is the end, there is no more,

Until I meet, that bear once more,

This is the end there is no more,

Until I meet that bear once more.

The Frogs

(four part round)

Hear the lively song of the frogs

in yonder pond,

crick, crick, crickity, crick

BRrruuuummmpp

Linger

Hmmmm, I want to linger,

Hmmmm, a little longer,

Hmmmm, a little longer here with you.

Hmmmm, it’s such a perfect night,

Hmmmm, it doesn’t seem quite right,

Hmmmm, that this should be my last with you.

Hmmmm, and come September,

Hmmmm, I will remember,

Our camping days and friendships true.

Hmmmm, and as the years go by,

Hmmmm, I’ll think of you and sigh,

Hmmmm, this is good night and not good bye.

Hmmmm, I want to linger,

Hmmmm, a little longer,

Hmmmm, a little longer here with you.

Suitors

There are suitors at my door,

o-o lay o bodee o

six or eight or many more

o-o lay o bodee o

and my father wants me wed

o-o lay o bodee o

or at least that’s what he said

o-o lay o bodee o

chorus

o lay o la, oh lay oh la

oh lay oh lay, oh lay oh la

And I told him that I will

o-o lay o bodee o

when the rivers run up hill

o-o lay o bodee o

when the fish begin to fly

o-o lay o bodee o

or the day before I die

repeat chorus

And my father said to me,

o-o lay o bodee o

“you will marry and you’ll see,

o-o lay o bodee o

that your dream will all come true

o-o lay of bodee o

in a paradise for two”.

Repeat chorus

Spider’s Web

Chorus

There’s a web like a spider’s web,

Made of silk and light and shadow,

Spun by the moon, in my room at night,

It’s a web made to catch a dream,

Hold it tight ‘til I awaken,

As if to tell me the dream is all right.

Down in the valley, there’s a fountain,

By the old oak tree,

By the fountain, there’s a mission

Where my love told me…

Repeat chorus

In the evening, I was sleeping,

My love dreamed of me.

I was sleeping, she was weeping,

And she said to me…

Repeat chorus

I met a stranger, his name was danger,

We rode side by side.

Down in Santa Fe, I killed a man, they say,

Danger told me to ride.

Now if I return, they will hang me,

By the old oak tree.

By the fountain, near the mission,

Where my love told me…

Repeat chorus

The Brownie Song

(You can use hand gestures for this song!)

I have something in my pocket,

That belongs across my face,

I keep it very close at hand,

In a most convenient place.

I’m sure you wouldn’t guess it,

If you guessed a long, long while.

So I’ll take it out and put it on,

It’s a great big Brownie smile!

Taps

Day is done, gone the sun,

From the lake, from the hill,

From the sky, all is well

Safely rest, God is nigh.

Thanks and praise, for our days,

‘neath the sun, ‘neath stars,

‘neath the sky, as we go

this we know, God is nigh.

Peace

Peace I ask of the, o river,

Peace, peace, peace.

When I learn to live serenely,

Cares will cease.

From the hills I gather courage,

Vision of the day to be.

Strength to lead

And strength to follow,

All are given unto me.

Peace I ask of thee, o river,

Peace, peace, peace.

Make New Friends

(four part round)

Make new friends, but keep the old

One is silver and the other gold.

A circle’s round, It has no end,

That’s how long I want to be your friend.

Green Trees

Green trees around us,

Blue skies above,

Friends all around us,

In a world filled with love.

Taps sounding softly,

Hearts beating true,

As we all say,

Good night to you.

Donkey Riding

Were you ever in Quebec,

Stowing timbers on the deck?

See the king with the golden crown,

Riding on a donkey.

Chorus

Hi, ho, ‘way we go, donkey riding, donkey riding

Hi, ho ‘way we go, riding on a donkey.

Were you ever off the horn,

Where it’s always nice and warm,

See the lion and the unicorn,

Riding on a donkey.

Chorus

Were you ever in Cardiff Bay,

Where the folks all shout “hooray!”

Here comes Johnny with three months pay,

Riding on a donkey.

Chorus

White Coral Bells

(two part round)

White coral bells, upon a slender stalk,

Lilies of the valley deck my garden walk.

Oh don’t you wish, that you could hear them ring.

That will happen only when the fairies sing.

Back of the Bread

(traditional grace)

Back of the bread is the flour,

And back of the flour is the mill,

And back of the mill is the wind and the rain,

And the father’s will.

Kee-chee

(a game from Zaire)

Ah wune kune cha, a wuni.

A wune kune cha, a wuni.

Ah yi yi yiki ay kae ayna

Ah yi yi yiki ay kae ayna

A ooo a ooo

A dee mee kee che.

Actions: hands on own knees

Hands on knees of person to the left

Hands on own knees

Hands on person to the right

Hands rest on own knees at the end of the song.

Hands on own knees

Hands crossed on own knees

Left hand on knees of person to left; right hand on

Knee of the person to the right.

Hands rest on own knees at the end of song.

Extend left arm forward.

Touch left wrist then left shoulder with right

Hand; keep right hand on left shoulder.

Cross left hand to right shoulder.

Extend right arm forward and repeat actions with

Left hand. Hands are crossed touching opposite shoulders

At end of song.

Extend index fingers up, fold down, and point inward.

Fingers end pointing inward at end of song.

Tell Me Why

Tell me why, the stars do shine

Tell me why, the ivy twines,

Tell me why the sky’s so blue,

And I will tell you, just why I love you.

Because God made the stars to shine,

Because God made the ivy twine,

Because God made the sky so blue,

Because God made you, that’s why I love you.

Each Campfire Lights Anew

Each campfire lights anew,

The flame of friendship true,

The joy we’ve had in knowing you,

Will last our whole life through.

And as the embers die away,

We wish that we could ever stay,

But since we cannot have our way,

We’ll meet again some other day.

All Night, All Day

All night, all day

Angels watchin’ over me my lord,

Pray the lord my soul to keep,

Angels watchin’ over me,

If I die before I wake,

Angels watchin’ over me my lord,

Pray the lord my soul to take,

Angels watchin’ over me.

Nobody Home

(three part round)

Hey ho, nobody home,

No meat, nor milk, nor money

Have I known,

Still I will be merry, merry

Bed Is Too Small

Bed is too small for my tired head

Sing me a lullaby of dreams

Tuck a cloud up under my chin,

Lord, blow the moon out, please

Bed is too small for my tired head,

Give me a hill topped with trees,

Tuck a cloud up under my chin,

Lord blow the moon out, please.

Rose

(three part round)

Rose, rose, rose, rose

Will I ever see thee wed

I will marry at thy will,

Sire, at thy will.

Old Lady O’Leary

One dark night while we were all in bed

Old Lady O'Leary lit a lantern in the shed

And when the cow kicked it over

She winked her eye and said

There'll be a hot time in the ole town tonight!

Fire! Fire! Fire!

Repeat

Water! Water! Water!

Repeat

Roast Beef!

Barges

Out of my window looking in the night

I can see the barges flickering light.

Silently flows the river to the sea,

And the barges they go silently.

Barges, I would like to go with you,

I would like to sail the ocean blue.

Barges, have you treasures in your hold?

Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Out of my window looking in the night

I can see the barges flickering light.

Starboard shines green and port is glowing red

I can see the barges far ahead.

chorus

Out of my window, looking in the night,

I can see the barges flickering light.

Anchors start to pull and engines start to roar

As the barges pull away from shore.

chorus

Out of my window, looking in the night,

I can see the barges flickering light.

Stars are brightly lighting up the sky

As the barges seem to skip right by.
